Tortilla Festival in Laro

The omelette conquers Silleda

The classic dish is tasted in many varieties at this popular festival

Every year, on the first Friday of August, the parish of Laro, in Silleda, exudes the aroma of traditional gastronomy. Since 1989, in this northern point of As Rías Baixas, groups of friends and families gather to enjoy one of the simplest and most acclaimed dishes in Spanish cuisine: the omelette; specifically, the popular tortilla de Laro.

This celebration, declared of Tourist Interest in Galicia in 2013 to coincide with its 25th anniversary, brings together more than 10,000 diners every year in the aforementioned municipality of Pontevedra. The recipe is simple: potatoes, eggs, a touch of salt and, if you like, onion. Around the table, fun is guaranteed. So, what started out as a gathering in which the protagonists were a few hundred people, has now become an event of reference in which people number in the thousands.

Known for their excellent gastronomy, the northern regions of the province, such as Deza or Tabeirós-Terra de Montes, offer the visitor endless tourist possibilities. If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the coastal areas, they are undoubtedly the ideal choice. You can rest in one of the numerous rural tourism houses in the area and lose yourself in natural spaces that will surprise you: the O Candán mountain range or the river beach of Vilatuxe are two enclaves that are as different as they are memorable.

Other gastronomic festivals in Trasdeza

Along with the omelette, other dishes give shape in Trasdeza - as Silleda is also known - to different gastronomic festivals. This is the case of the empanada, which has been celebrated in A Bandeira every third Saturday in August since 1974 and has also been declared of Tourist Interest in Galicia. Rosquilla, lacón, chestnut, paella and carne ao caldeiro are the protagonists of other smaller but equally applauded culinary events in this municipality of As Rías Baixas.
