This ría is one of the three main sea access points in the Rías Baixas. It is also the most regular in shape and third-biggest of those in Galicia, with a surface area of 145 km². There are several island in the ría: Tambo at the head, Ons at the mouth (which is the largest), and Onceta (the smallest) - the latter make up part of the Galician Atlantic Islands Maritime-Terrestrial National Park. Aldán cove is located at its southernmost point.

Hace 4000 años existía un valle fluvial en lo que hoy es la ría de Pontevedra, que posteriormente fue inundado por el océano Atlántico.
En la Antigüedad, los municipios de Pontevedra, Poio, Marín, Sanxenxo y Bueu no estaban junto al mar. Hace quince mil años, el mar comenzó a penetrar poco a poco en el valle, pero probablemente llegó a la actual entrada del río Lérez en Pontevedra hace unos cuatro mil años.
