Cambados, the birthplace of Albariño
Heritage, history and spectacular wineries. Cambados offers many attractions for those who want to enjoy the aroma of its wines, a varied gastronomy linked to the sea and its stately historic centre.
Its historic wine culture, the overwhelming success of the Albariño Festival, declared of International Tourist Interest, and the quality of the Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin have catapulted Cambados as one of the great wine capitals and are the perfect complement to its rich heritage and history as a town.
Phoenicians, Romans, Goths, Saracens and Normans threatened its coasts in different periods and were repelled from the Tower of San Sadurniño , whose ruins are preserved on the islet of A Figueira.
The value of its neighbours encouraged Fernando II to grant it the distinction of "Muy Real Villa" in the 12th century, inaugurating a period of growth and splendour that visitors can still perceive in noble buildings such as the pazos of Torrado, Bazán, Ulloa or Moltó.
A visit to the wineries will allow you to taste the wines of the Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin, which are renowned all over the world.
The old quarter of Cambadès, where the pazos of Fefiñáns and Montesacro shine with their own light, is perfect for a stroll and an ideal aperitif before visiting one of the wineries where you can taste the world-renowned Albariño wine.
The capital of O Salnés offers multiple plans. A visit to the municipality should include stops at the Ethnographic Museum and the Wine Museum to learn about the origin of its fertile vines, cultivation methods, the grape harvest and its impact on the land. And if a glass of Albariño is the first image that evokes Cambados in the minds of travellers, the second should be some good scallops prepared in the style of the town, the star product of the local gastronomy.
Newcomers should walk to the foot of A Pastora hill to visit the ruins of Santa Mariña Dozo (16th century), one of the most special places in the region, an ancient temple with impressive architecture and a historic cemetery where time seems to have stood still.
