Romería de la Virgen de a Franqueira

Every 8 September, this romería (a religious festival) returns to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of A Franqueira to celebrate the nativity of the Virgin. The tradition of a statue of the Virgin marching from the sanctuary in an ox cart has been carried out through the centuries. After the procession, four pairs of young people from the parish perform the ‘White Dances’ in honour of the Virgin, which are an incredible spectacle due to the beautiful costumes and the complex performances. A theatre piece called ‘The Moor and the Christian’ takes place after the dances, in which a Christian successfully coverts a Muslim to Christianity.
