This eclectic building was designed by architect José Mª Ortiz in 1861 to house the old courthouse and jail. As an art centre it aims to promote contemporary cultural projects and is characterised by a dynamic programme and a participatory approach.
The main activities organised by the museum are temporary exhibitions featuring recent art of multiple creative disciplines (plastic arts, architecture, video, design and cinema). They can be classified into three main groups: multidisciplinary collections about art and culture on a national and international scale, research and historic revision promoting Galician authors and avant-garde artistic movements, and lastly, an exhibition room in an attached building for projects from emerging Galician artists.
The museum is one of the most avant-garde parts of the city and offers educational programmes to schools, families and children, as well as training to artists and teachers.
