The Monte das Covas Viewpoint is one of the most outstanding scenic sites in inland Deza. Its name is linked to ancient local legends that tell of underground caves hidden on the mountain slopes, giving the place an aura of mystery and popular tradition.
From its altitude of over 1,100 metres, this privileged natural balcony offers one of the widest panoramas in inland Galicia. On clear days, the view stretches across the lands of Deza and even reaches the surroundings of Santiago de Compostela, allowing visitors to admire a succession of mountains, valleys and villages that form an extraordinarily beautiful landscape.
Crowning the summit is the Zarragrande Astronomical Observatory, a pioneering facility in Galicia built in 1993 by amateur astronomer José María López Pérez. For years it was the only astronomical observatory in Galicia and it remains the only private observatory open to scheduled visits. Its privileged location allows the observation of the night sky to be combined with impressive panoramic views over the territory.
At nightfall, Monte das Covas reveals one of its greatest attractions. Low light pollution and its wide horizon make this place an exceptional setting for observing the stars, the Milky Way and various astronomical phenomena.
For this reason, the Monte das Covas Viewpoint is part of the “Baixo o Ceo das Rías Baixas” Astrotourism Network, an initiative that highlights some of the best locations in the province of Pontevedra for night sky observation. Here, nature, legend, landscape and astronomy come together to offer a unique experience under one of the most spectacular skies in inland Galicia.
