At the start of the 17th century, the visit of the Cardinal Jerónimo del Hoyo showcased the modesty of this parish and the existence of two neighbouring churches (the parish church of San Mamede and the chapel of San Sebastián, built during the 16th century). Artistic remains of that era are still preserved in the parish: two stone baldachins from the former church, one attached to the right wall and another used as a lintel on a door on the left side.
The church has a cross floor plan and its style is close to that of the Neo-classicism. On the façade, the only decorations are a triangular pediment over the door and a figure of a saint in the centre. Other remarkable elements of the church are the 12th century baptismal font and an image of the Immaculate Conception. The Lamb of God roams on the roof and a horse head is embedded in the western wall. A sundial was later added to the façade.
Both the church and the hill where it is located were owned by the Order of Saint Benedict.
