This lighthouse was first lit in 1866. Initially the light was generated by a wick lamp which burned vegetable oil, but it was replaced by a gas lamp in 1909. A new building attached to the west face of the lighthouse tower opened on top of the mountain on 3 August 1924, at 85 metres above sea level. The 30-metre-tall prismatic lighthouse produces a white flash every 15 seconds with a range of 35 nautical miles (65 km).
