This festival dates back to the creation of the confraternity of San Miguel (Saint Michael), patron saint of the guild of mariners, in the 17th century. The sword dance was performed to the sound of the music, bagpipes and drums as a way to honour him and express appreciation for productive tides and the avoidance of accidents at sea. With time it became a religious and cultural tradition in the town of Marín and was declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in 2010.
