Siblings Álvaro, García, María and Isabel Ozores de Sotomayor decided to found a nuns’ monastery in 1558. They built it in the town of A Guarda, and it followed the Rule of Saint Benedict, the father of Western monasticism. The religious members of the family would live there in community with any woman who decided join and follow the discipline and observance of a religious lifestyle. They notified the Bishop of the Diocese of Tui, Diego de Torquemada, and started construction, which was completed in 1561. Once both monastery and church were built, they created the founding charter and dedicated the monastery to the transfiguration of Jesus and the Rule of Saint Benedict. A total of 34 nuns came to live there. The monastery is now used a historic hotel too.
